What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are stored on a user’s device when they visit a website. It is the website operator who determines what information the cookie contains and its purpose; the cookie may also be accessed by the web server each time the user visits the site. Cookies are used to save time and make the web browsing experience much more efficient. However, they can be used for various different purposes, such as remembering your login details or the contents of your shopping basket.
Types of cookies depending on who manages them:
- In-house cookies: these are cookies sent to the user’s device from another device or domain managed by the publisher itself, from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: these are cookies sent to the user’s device from a computer or domain that is not managed by the website operator, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
Types of cookies based on how long they remain active:
- Session cookies: these are a type of cookie designed to collect and store data whilst the user is accessing a website.
- Persistent cookies: these are a type of cookie in which the data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie issuer, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
Types of cookies by purpose:
- Technical cookies: those are cookies that enable the user to navigate a website, platform or application and to use the various options or services available on it, such as controlling data traffic and communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, remember the items included in an order, complete the purchase process for an order, submit a registration or participation request for an event, use security features whilst browsing, store content for the streaming of videos or audio, or share content via social media.
- Personalization or preference cookies: those are cookies that allow the user to access the service with certain predefined general settings based on a number of criteria on the user’s device, such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional settings of the location from which the service is accessed, etc.
- Analytical cookies: those enable the controller to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users on the websites to which they are linked, including measuring the impact of advertisements. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure activity on websites, applications or platforms, with a view to making improvements based on the analysis of how users interact with the service.
- Behavioural advertising cookies: those are cookies that store information about users’ behaviour, obtained through the continuous monitoring of their browsing habits, which enables the creation of a specific profile for the purpose of displaying advertising tailored to that profile.
